Spanish River Academies Gain Success

The Foundation in its mission to promote educational excellence at Spanish River High School is proud to provide supplemental funding for and support for the School’s Institutes and Academies-- Biotech, Law & History, Business, Arts and Education.

This issue highlights three such programs:

Gilder Lehrman American History & Law Academy

The Gilder Lehrman American History & Law Academy promotes the study and love of American history and the legal framework that has helped to define it.
The program was designed to cultivate and promote knowledge and appreciation of American political, cultural and economic foundations, and prepares students in legal theory and practical application of the law to help individuals in our society.
Classes foster the importance of economic and geographical relationships and increase awareness of the richness and diversity in American society. Students are exposed to primary and secondary documents through various publications and traveling exhibits, as well as lectures by eminent historians.
In addition, students participate in field experiences through trips to museums and historical sites. Students also have opportunity to test their knowledge in state and national competitions.

Entrepreneurship Academy

The entrepreneurship program, the first of its kind in Florida, is designed to prepare students to pursue a university degree or career in business by offering a comprehensive and challenging curriculum in business courses and related subjects including Mandarin Chinese.
Students are exposed to coursework in marketing, management, business law, business computing and ac-counting that provides the basic business tools to under-stand the many facets of developing and/or owning a business or serving as a corporate executive of a business.
Additionally, students are encouraged to participate in Spanish River’s internationally competitive DECA business club which offers them the opportunity to hone their skills in competitions at the district, state and national/international level.

Biotechnology

Biotechnology is a rapidly expanding field of biology that uses a growing set of techniques to derive valuable products from organisms and their cells. Biotechnology is already commonly used to identify criminals, determine paternity, diagnose diseases, make high-yield pest-resistant crops, and treat genetic ailments.
The program at Spanish River uses a "hands on" approach to the study of molecular biology and biochemistry.
The students use advanced lab equipment in a state of the art lab facility to conduct biotech experiments in the program. The students will develop skills sets in advanced laboratory work, scientific research and experimental design. This will provide them a strong foundation for success in areas of study such as medicine, pharmacy, and other science related studies.
